Tourism School at Bad Gleichenberg, Styria

The new building of the tourism school at Bad Gleichenberg in Styria has been given a ceiling ensemble which perfectly fulfils the acoustic requirements. The ceiling construction was provided by the specialised German company Vogl Deckensysteme from Emskirchen.

Bad Gleichenberg is a small spa town in Styria. Its mineral springs were used during the Roman periods already and they have been belonging to the well-known Austrian spa towns since the Biedermeier period.

The four-storey new building of the tourism school which has been erected between two existing buildings catches the eye with its expressive form and it follows a clear structured line. The new building part contains the foyer, a big function room and refectory with a canteen kitchen, a library and, above it, the new boarding school part. "The new building rises between and above two older buildings thus forming an ensemble which combines the buildings to an architectural and urban composition", Prof. DI Michael Szyszkowitz explains who is an architect with the architecture firm Szyszkowitz-Kowalski + Partner ZT GmbH from Graz which managed the construction. The useful floor space of the new building is 7,450 m² and its construction costs are EUR 8.4 m.

The new central entrance is a striking feature of this building. It is the architectural and functional connection between all building parts. "The special feature of the local situation at the hill side with the different heights of the existing objects and their different positions to the sloping road are integrated by the new project and with it they are given specific roles," the architect explains the draft. The realisation followed a competition submission procedure which the architectural firm Szyszkowitz-Kowalski + Partner ZT GmbH won. The actual construction work started in October 2010. The two older buildings, i.e. the residential home in Haus Possenhofen and the school building, could be still used during this time. The school was commissioned in October 2011. The inauguration of the boarding school part followed in January 2012.

Sound absorption and air purification

The internationally prestigious tourism school at Bad Gleichenberg offers different school types which are completed with a higher education entrance qualification or diploma. The new object rises from its neighbourhood with its form and air. The eye is caught by the curved flight of stairs whose asymmetrical shape contrasts from the street and parking area. Its light sweep leads from two sides to the central main entrance which is also underlined by a protruding part which encompasses the projecting roof and the multiform parts of the old buildings and of the new building in the total complex. The "caput mortuum" colour is an earth colour and it serves as intermediary between the different colours of the old buildings and the natural space of the park - which is a masterly performance of colour design. Indoors it is the new refectory whose room quality makes it the communication and teaching centre for pupils.

The dry construction work cost EUT 350,000. Work started in February 2011 and was completed in August 2011. The Styrian association of colleges of hotel management awarded the construction management to WENDL ZT GmbH, a Graz-based company, and the dry construction work to the Weiz-based company Lieb Bau Weiz GmbH& Co. KG.

Homogeneous ceiling design without sanding

VoglAdsorperplatte with air purification functionality was used. The selected adsorber panel has a round perforation 12/25, a perforated area of 18.1% and is backed with black acoustic fleece. This type of panel was mounted on an area of 1,730 m² in the respective rooms. Besides its highly efficient sound absorption it has an influence on the interior climate and provides feel-good character. "On principle, we deliver our acoustic design panels as adsorber panels without extra costs," product manager Benedikt Roos of the German ceiling manufacturer Vogl Deckensysteme from Emskirchen says.

Stefan Luisser of the company Lieb Bau Weiz GmbH & Co KG who was the site manager for the interior construction and thus was responsible for the dry construction work, explains: "Bespoke work was required for the execution of the skilled manual work - not only for the half-round or curved forms but also for the shadow gaps. Precision was also required for the great number of ceiling recesses for the access panel where the built-in spotlights and the lighting rows were installed flush with the ceiling later.

VoglFuge

The joint finishing was accomplished using the product VoglFuge which meets the highest demands and creates a homogeneous ceiling appearance. It is also an alternative to the joint systems known so far using adhesive and compound seams. The advantage: It provides the dry construction contractor with an easy-to-use product where no tedious filling work is required anymore. The scope of delivery also includes the VoglFuge system kit. It has everything the dry construction specialist needs for his work: such as, for example, a sponge, screws, tools and a detailed installation guide.

The dry construction specialist first mounts the single panels edge to edge onto a level ceiling framework. After installing the panels, he has to eliminate any discrepancies in height, Later, the joint area is slightly moistened with a sponge, in the direction of the joints, the Vogl liquid joint coating (ready-mix product) applied with a lambskin roller, and the VoglFuge strip fixed rubber side down in the middle of the joint in the moist liquid joint coating. After the drying time, the joint surface is smoothed and worked with the sanding paper in joint direction. Sanding and cross-sanding are not necessary.

All components of the Vogl products are perfectly matched which increases the value of every building through form, colour and functionality and which makes its usefulness more sustainable!
