Deutsche Oper in Berlin Deutsche Oper in Berlin Deutsche Oper in Berlin

On Silent Feet

The Deutsche Oper in Berlin is a building in the style of the sixties, with clear lines and of sober elegance. The spacious rehearsal rooms were equipped with a new ceiling system. The Middle-Franconian manufacturer Vogl Deckensysteme was selected for the project. By using their Vogl adsorber panel, the Emskirchen-based ceiling specialist not only created a pleasant room climate in the former painting workshop, but also provided optimum sound absorption.

The Deutsche Oper is located in Berlin's Bismarckstraße 35. Since it was founded in November 1912, the second-largest German opera house has gone through a changeful history in the German federal capital. The shape of the building is an eye-catcher: a light-coloured cube floating on a dark recessed base.

Especially the thick wall of washed-out concrete slabs makes the building stand out from the surrounding urban architecture. 70 metres long and 12 metres high, this windowless cladding accentuates the building in the same manner as the huge window front facing the forecourt which offers a view of the "floating staircase" inside. Seating more than 1,800, the Deutsche Oper is one of three opera houses in the German metropolis. The auditorium, too, is out of the ordinary. It is not designed in a U-shape as is usually the case in theatres, but dominated by cantilever balconies.

All affected areas in the former painting workshop, now the new rehearsal rooms, here in the ballet rehearsal studios 2, 3 and 4 as well as the foyer "de la dance", were clad with a sound-absorbing ceiling system of Vogl adsorber panels. They were installed to cover a ceiling area of 2,685.21 m². The Middle-Franconian manufacturer Vogl Deckensysteme specialises in such optimum solutions that guarantee a combination of outstanding sound absorption and air purification.

Excellent sound absorption including pleasant air

Whether architects or designers, whoever is looking for ceiling products that have to ensure highly effective sound absorption and purify the room air at the same time, will find that the Vogl adsorber panel is a perfect combination of these features. This product is, therefore, the best choice for such tasks on the one hand, and it absorbs the "bad atmosphere" into the bargain! For the room climate has to be right particularly in the rooms where the ballet rehearses every day so that the dancers can fully develop their artistic performance. "In this case, a product is used that does not release any hazardous substances to the interior, but purifies the room air and thus contributes to the well-being of the artists", Benedikt Roos, product manager of Vogl Deckensysteme, explains.

This is achieved by the interrelation of temperature, humidity, air quality and air movement and, on the other hand, the interaction of physical, biological and chemical factors that even takes the interior humidity into account. Experience has shown that a person is most comfortable in an air mix of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.03% carbon oxide and 0.93% of noble gases, and at a room temperature between 21 and 22 degrees Celsius.

Quick joint finishing

The Vogl adsorber panel is a plasterboard ceiling panel with high acoustic performance and with the additional function of air purification. Manufactured in a special process, it can absorb the air, purify it and release it back to the room. Panels of the dimensions 1188 x 1998 x 12.5 mm with a perforation of 8/18 Quadro were used to install the ceiling system in the designated rooms. They have a perforated area of 19.8 % and are backed with black acoustic fleece. The joint finishing was accomplished using the product VoglFuge, which meets the highest demands and creates a homogeneous ceiling appearance.

Homogeneous ceiling appearance without sanding

The joint technology of VoglFuge makes the finishing of joints child's play. The delivery of the VoglFuge system kit contains everything the dry construction specialist needs for his work: such as, for example, a sponge, screws, tools and a detailed installation guide. It is a great alternative to the joint systems hitherto known as this system allows quick and easy-to-use joint finishing without all the tedious filling work.

The dry construction specialist first mounts the single panels edge to edge onto a level ceiling framework. After installing the panels, he has to eliminate any discrepancies in height, for instance by adjusting the Vogl perforated panel screws. The dry construction specialist can then spot-fill the screw heads in the joint area using Vogl screw head and repair filler. Any protruding plasterboard edges are simply removed with a sanding pad. The joint area is then slightly moistened with a sponge working in the direction of the joints, and Vogl liquid joint coating (ready-mix product) is applied with a lambskin roller. A very simple and efficient aid is put to use now: The VoglFuge strip is placed in the middle of the moist liquid joint coating with its rubberised side down and thus affixed to the joint. The two hours of drying time can be used to spot-fill the screw heads in the middle of the panels. All that is left to be done after the drying time is smoothing the joint surface with sanding paper, again working in direction of the joint. Intensive sanding is not necessary, and the result is impressive: an appealing surface image without any visible panel edges!
