Requirements
Internet search engine giant Google have enjoyed huge growth since the company first arrived in Dublin in 2004. Continued growth has demanded more and more office space and recently expanded the company its base to include the Montevetro Building which doubled its office space to an excess of over 40,000 m². The Dublin office serves as the Google Head office for its operations in Europe, Middle East and Africa and now employs over 3000 staff “Googlers” in Sales, Engineering, Legal and HR, making it the largest Google operation outside its Corporate Head office in Mountain View California. The environment in the Google’s Dublin office is unique, and with staff from 65 different countries and speaking 45 languages, a very special type of office environment was demanded. Google’s corporate focus is on “excellence while having fun” and this principal was central to the interior office design.

The Google offices represent a new generation of office work environment, it is based on detailed research guided by Physiologists into the functional, emotional as well as practical need of Googlers. This building is like a city and like every city there are areas where people live and communal areas where people can meet with a connection of “roads” and networks between them. The personal workspace is like a living area as the research has shown, which need to be functional and more neutral in order to accommodate frequent staff rotation and growth Architects Henry J Lyons chose Vogl Ceilings of Emskirchen in Germany to provide ceilings in many of critical areas throughout the Google cluster of buildings.
As Video conferencing with Google offices and clients all over the world is a pre requisite there are many meeting rooms fitted with video conferencing facilities. Good acoustics is essential but the ceilings also needed to follow the creative theme set by the designers. So a range of different perforated plasterboard patterns were chosen and installed by Vogl Ceilings of Emskirchen in Germany to create not just a comfortableacoustic environment but also to give a stunning visual backdrop to the unconventional fit out arrangements at Google. Vogl ceilings were installed as floating acoustic ceilings features in communal areas as well as in meeting rooms and private office spaces.
The Team at Vogl had to respond to a detailed and specific specification requirement for this project including providing a detailed proposal outlining how Vogl Ceilings could assist Google in achieving its objective to receive the ‘Platinum’ LEED accreditation for this interior fit-out.
The construction works was planned over a series of 8 phases, extending over 14 months. Google’s operations within these buildings were maintained throughout the duration of the works. Vogl perforated boards using their unique seamless joint system, not only added to the speed of installation in what was a tight turnaround time but also offers a crack resistant ceiling which will withstand the test of time. Fitted Vogl access panels allow access to services without compromising the overall aesthetics.
The buildings, now fully completely refurbished, have been transformed into Google’s most modern offices in the world, surpassing the recently completed projects in Zurich and Moscow.
